The Programme

A six-week programme that changes how pupils see themselves as readers.

Designed for Year 5 and Year 6. Built around pupil agency.

Year 5 & 6Group deliverySix weeksInclusive of all abilities

Reading Remedy addresses the motivational and identity layer of reading that sits above skills - the part that determines whether a child becomes a reader for life.

Whilst reading engagement is the focus, the six sessions have been designed to complement the English national curriculum. Through a range of interactive activities, accessible to every ability, children naturally practise comprehension and inference skills.

How it works

What happens across six weeks.

  1. Week 1-2Reflect

    Rethinking reading

Pupils reflect on their reading identity, explore what reading is and debunk myths surrounding the process. These sessions are interactive and conversational; student responses shape the remainder of the programme.

  2. Week 3-4Reset

    Wellbeing and agency

Pupils learn how reading can help them, discover practical strategies for finding books they'll engage with and have time to explore a wide range of reading materials. They make a personal reading pledge - a realistic, self-set goal for the weeks ahead.

  3. Week 5-6Reconnect

    Building and sustaining

Pupils review their progress, celebrate what worked, and develop a personal plan for maintaining reading habits beyond the programme.
